Vinegar and Eggs

Our science experiment this week had us making a naked egg. and a bouncing egg. We have done these two experiments before but the girls liked it so much that they wanted to do it again.

We bring to you the Egg and Vinegar Experiment.

You will need:

1 boil egg

1 raw egg

vinegar

2 jars

Instructions:

Place an egg in each jar.

Fill the jar half way. Or until the egg is covered.

Set it and forget it! No… Really… You can set it and observe it for a period of 3-4 days.

The acetic acid reacts with the calcium carbonate in the egg shell and releases carbon dioxide gas that you see as bubbles on the shell.

After all of the shell is gone, you can take the egg out. Be careful with the raw one, because it can still break. The hard boiled egg should be able to bounce a little like a ball.

The shell of an egg (typically a chicken egg) is made up of primarily calcium carbonate. If you soak the egg shell in vinegar you start a chemical reaction that dissolves the calcium carbonate shell. The egg insides remain intact and are held together by the two fragile membranes just inside the shell.
