Took the kids to a clay shooting yesterday! I didn’t know what to expect going to the range. Hubby had taken the boys before so they knew what to expect. It was my first time so I was a little apprehensive to the situation.
We drove about 30 minutes out to Coyote Clays Range. We rode up a bumpy, dirt road into the mountains.
Riding past the cows
When finally got to the range we were greeted with the constant sound of shots being fired.
Before we started shooting, we had to sign waivers agreeing with we knew about safety, responsibilities, and rules of shooting at the range. We made sure everyone was safe and responsible before we got started. At this time you can buy bullets, if you didn’t have your own. You could also rent a shot gun if you didn’t have one of your own. They offer 12 gauge and 20 gauge Shot guns.
There are 20 different spots to shoot from. Some spot had only one clay disc shooting from a particular point. Where as in other areas you could try to shoot two disc at once.
Each post had a box for you to stand in if you are the one shooting.
Hubby was going over safety rules with our oldest son.
On the side of the standing post was a handle with buttons that controlled the machine that releases the clay. One person has to be the ‘Puller’ for the one that is shooting. Everyone else had to step back.
“PULL,” one son yelled out to the other.
It was the word used to let the puller know to let a disk fly. Eyes focused on the target as you watch it, waiting for the moment to pull the trigger.
POW! It’s a hit or miss sort of thing.
There have been many clay plates that have been shot down around the range
Empty shells were around the shooting cage
We were there for a few hours. I had noticed that their were BBQ pits and tables for anyone wanting to throw a party little gathering there. If you didn’t feel like cooking there is a little outdoor restaurant where you can order bbq fresh off the grill. Can’t really go wrong with BBQing and shooting.
You are probably thinking, “What are the girls doing at this time?” Well, we didn’t have a gun small enough for them to shoot with. This was their first time going so I wanted them to first get comfortable with the being around a gun. We wanted them to watch and learn. I had them bring books, and little toys to play with. They did neither of the two. They became the pullers and case holders and they enjoyed it. At one point, a worker had came by to check up on us, and offered the girls a ride around on the golf cart.
All in all, everyone had a great time! So much so that the kids have already asked when we can go back. We will definitely be doing this more often than not. It was so much fun!
