Nine years ago we were bless with a a surprise of a lifetime.
My baby girl was born. Completing are family in so many ways.
I had no complications during my pregnancy, and my labor went well. Both baby and I were find the first day in the hospital. The second day, baby girl had formed a small cough. I had mentioned it to her doctor but she informed me that is was normal for babies to have a cough because they were getting use to the world. I gave her the “Yeah Right” look. I had done this 3 times before and never had a child with a cough after they were born. I put my faith in my doctor, and took my baby home.
She didn’t have a check up for two weeks, but after a week, her cough didn’t go away. I made an appointment and took her in. Her doctor, once again, told me that she was fine and that I had nothing to worry about. I knew deep down inside that something was off, but I listened to her anyway. Back home baby and I went.
Thanksgiving morning comes around, and baby girl was 2 weeks old. Hubby and I woke up that morning like any other day. We were both tired from being up with baby girl the night before. She had been up all night crying and coughing. We still didn’t know what was wrong. Every time we would try to lay her down she would cry and sound badly congested. She would have a gargling sounds during her crying that just didn’t sound right.
Halfway through the morning, in the middle of preparing dinner, I went to check up and baby girl and noticed something very odd about her. She seem like she was turning blue, she wouldn’t eat, and her limbs seemed almost lifeless. She barely moved. I called hubby into the room asking him his opinion. He asked me to call the doctor so I did. I explained to her what was going on, she informed me that I should try to feed her and if she continues to not feed during the day then bring her in later. Hubby and I didn’t like that advice and decided to go ahead and take her to the emergency room. We got there and showed the nurse how baby girl looked and the admitted her immediately. Come to find out, she had a bacteria infection in her blood stream called MSRA and it lead to her catching pneumonia. The reason why she was crying the night before was because she couldn’t breath and it hurt her every time we tried to lay her down flat on her back. We were devastated to know that we could have lost her if we had waited like the pediatrician advised us. Baby girl was in the ICU until she was 3 months old. It was heartbreaking to visit her everyday and not be able to take her home. I was mad at myself because I told I had done something wrong. The nurse informed me that it wasn’t my fault. That she could have caught this infection after birth. She told me that 50% of the nurses and doctors carry the infection on their skin. She said that her elderly father was sick from the same infection 6 months prior and that it was going around. I was mad that she that could have gotten sick from the hospital, but I was relieved because Child Protective Services were questions me about my home settings and my parenting. After speaking to the doctors and nurses, they left our family alone. While baby girl was in the hospital, her pediatrician came to visit. She apologized for not being on top of of my baby’s health, and she was more aware and hands on.
What is MRSA you ask?
MRSA infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria — often called “staph.” MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It’s a strain of staph that’s resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it. MRSA can be fatal.
It was one of the scariest moments of my life. We almost lost that last piece to our puzzle. the last one to complete our family. I thank God everyday for giving me the chance to be the best mom I can be to one of the smartest little people I know. Now, at 9, she has excelled in more ways than one. She didn’t start walking or talking until she was two and a half. She went from not saying a word to saying complete sentences, and counting backwards from 20. By the time she was 3 she was running on her toes, and soaking in every bit of knowledge that came her way. She started reading Harry Potter books in the first grade, she taught her friends about algebra and variables in third grade. Now, in forth grade, she can do ninth grade math. She is part of the gifted program, and is at the top of her class. She is always helpful, loving, huggable, and so eager to learn.
Thank you God for my little baby genius! She brightens up everyone’s day with her big heart and her smile!!!!!
